Education in Auckland
A useful staff exercise begins with an observable aim: explain a concept at an appropriate level, check a resource against the course brief, or inspect a fictional feedback dataset. ChatGPT Projects keep related files and instructions together, and data analysis can examine structured uploads.6,8 Participants learn to ask what the result is based on and how to test it.
For a generic Auckland teaching team, we might use an invented module outline and fictional survey responses. Staff draft alternative explanations, then check whether each one preserves the concept and avoids assumptions about learners. TheColab comes to your workplace for a practical session that gives educators the final say over the material they will use.
Paid employees in education went from 65,558 in February 2020 to 69,636 in February 2025 (+6.2%).

Local context
- AUT's AI resources include help with lesson planning, activities and rubrics. Its assessment redesign programme also asks staff to make learning evidence visible during task preparation. These are local reasons to practise critical review.1,21,2
- The University of Auckland publishes a list of approved AI tools and asks staff to follow its usage standard. That list does not grant ChatGPT permission to a different institution or establish school approval.33

Where ChatGPT helps education teams
Prepare explanations from a course brief
Give a Project an approved concept note and an invented learning task. Ask for different explanations that use the same underlying idea, then have subject staff check accuracy, vocabulary and hidden assumptions. Preserve the original reference beside the draft so the team can see where a simplification changes the meaning.6
- Subject educator
- ChatGPT Projects
Inspect synthetic feedback patterns
Upload fictional survey responses and ask data analysis to group comments while showing the original entries. Check an ambiguous comment and an empty response before interpreting the chart. Use the findings to frame a teaching-team question, not to diagnose a real learner's ability or make a staffing conclusion from generated categories.8

- ChatGPT data analysis
Check a reusable preparation GPT
For an existing approved custom GPT, inspect the instructions and test a request that conflicts with the institution's staff-use policy. Record the desired boundary and the failure. OpenAI now recommends migrating custom GPT workflows to plugins, so check account notices and test the replacement before extending that resource across a teaching team.7

- Custom GPT review and migration planning
Find a permitted policy reference
If a connected app is approved, retrieve a public or training-copy policy and open the source before drafting guidance for staff. Ask the participant to distinguish the policy's wording from the assistant's explanation. Keep learner records outside the connection and verify which app functions the institution has enabled for the exercise.9

- Connectors and connected apps
Test a resource before classroom use
- Choose an invented module and a permitted reference that defines the concept accurately.
- Draft alternative explanations and identify the assumptions in each version.
- Ask a subject colleague to challenge an explanation that appears clear but changes the concept.
- Revise the resource and record the educator's approval before planning any learner activity.

Education in Auckland: questions
Can the examples avoid real student information?
They can use a fictional module, synthetic feedback and public policy documents. A known reference answer makes it easier to see where the assistant misunderstood the task. Staff still practise the review steps they would need for a permitted workplace trial.
Should every resource become a custom GPT?
Review the planned retirement notices first. OpenAI's current GPT documentation recommends migration to plugins.7 Describe the repeat preparation task and maintain its instructions independently, so a product change does not erase the teaching team's useful review method.
Does the workshop require agent mode?
The course uses ordinary supported preparation and analysis tasks. The official agent page now says agent mode is unavailable, with older contradictory instructions still present.10 We confirm the account's usable features before making any delivery commitment.
How do we assess a staff pilot?
Check whether staff catch factual errors, preserve the intended outcome and explain what the output cannot establish. Ask a colleague to review the material before it reaches learners. Use those observations to improve the preparation routine, without assuming a saving or learning gain.
