Education in Canterbury

Ara lists campuses in Christchurch and Timaru, and its teaching team has publicly explored AI for literacy, numeracy and planning.1,2 That local evidence supports practical staff learning. It does not mean every school or provider has adopted the same policy. A fictional training example can use an invented adult learner and a public workplace document.

ChatGPT Projects bring related chats, instructions and sources together.5 Use a Project to define the learning objective, reading demands and evidence the teacher expects. Ask for alternatives and their trade-offs before choosing an activity. Training should help educators notice where an attractive worksheet changes the learning task or supplies an answer learners were meant to work out.

Paid employees in education went from 24,380 in February 2020 to 27,048 in February 2025 (+10.9%).

Local context

  • UC's current Gen-AI hub separates responsible use, available tools and recording guidance.4 Staff should make those same distinctions in a workshop: having an account, using approved material and allowing AI in assessment are different decisions that belong to the institution.4

Where ChatGPT helps education teams

  • Adapt a workplace reading activity

Put a public sample instruction and a fictional learner profile into a Project. Ask for versions with different reading demands while preserving the technical meaning. The tutor checks that each activity still requires the intended skill. Reject changes that remove necessary vocabulary or make the answer obvious through formatting.

    • Literacy and vocational tutors
    • Projects and file context
  • Inspect an invented course export

Data analysis can expose calculations, sources and unresolved questions.8 Use synthetic course-enquiry records to practise grouping categories and finding missing fields. Ask for the excluded rows as well as the chart. Staff verify the grouping in the source sheet; the exercise does not infer performance about real learners.

    • Programme administrators
    • Data analysis
  • Build a staff-only planning helper

Create a skill that asks for the learning objective and permitted source material before drafting a resource. Skills hold reusable instructions and files, and the workspace decides who can share them.6 Keep sharing to staff, then test a request to produce an assessed answer and define when the skill must decline or escalate.

    • Learning design leads
    • Skills
  • Gather sources for a programme review

Approved apps can connect context to longer ChatGPT Work tasks.7 Point a rehearsal at public programme descriptions and fabricated review notes in a named folder. Request a source inventory first. The programme owner checks version and coverage before asking for themes, proposed improvements or a staff briefing.

A resource draft tested against its learning purpose

  1. Write the intended skill and choose a public document learners could interpret.
  2. Supply an invented learner profile without personal details or real assessment work.
  3. Request an activity, a teacher rationale and possible ways the task could be misunderstood.
  4. Work through the activity yourself and revise it before using it under institutional policy.

Education in Canterbury: questions

Is the course for staff or students?

These exercises are designed for educators and support teams. Student use needs its own eligibility, learning and assessment decisions. A staff workshop can produce questions for that policy work without assuming that a teacher's account is suitable for learners.

Can we practise marking with real submissions?

Use fabricated learner work to explore a draft feedback structure. Keep the educator responsible for judgements and check the institution's assessment policy. Introducing actual submissions requires a separate decision about data use, fairness and permission.

Should every department share the same helper?

Begin with a clearly defined subject or administrative routine. Different learning objectives require different review examples. Assign a staff owner, test difficult prompts and decide who may use the helper before broadening access across the provider.

Can Canterbury teaching teams learn on campus?

TheColab can deliver at your school, training centre or tertiary workplace anywhere in the region. Public workshop days suit individual educators who want initial skills. For a team session, bring a learning lead and a support colleague who can review the full activity.
