Education in Nelson
NMIT's Nelson campus provides a local tertiary setting, and Nelson College publishes guidance for its school community. In 2025, NMIT reported IT students developing AI projects with the Nelson AI Sandbox. Those examples show active local experimentation; they do not establish that every school or tutor has adopted the same tools.1,2,3
TheColab offers on-site training for Nelson staff groups and public workshop days. Start with a cleared learning objective and a fictional class scenario. ChatGPT can analyse files and create drafts for review. Ask participants to explain what would make the result educationally useful, then inspect the content before it becomes part of a lesson or support process.9
Paid employees in education went from 2,042 in February 2020 to 2,007 in February 2025 (−1.7%).

Local context
- NMIT's published responsible AI policy was approved in 2026. Nelson College points its community to SchoolDocs for current policies. Each training group should bring the rules that govern its own teaching, assessment and administrative work, rather than borrow an assumed regional standard.2,42,4

Where ChatGPT helps education teams
Prepare varied practice questions
Create a Project with an approved topic outline and reading. Ask ChatGPT for fictional practice questions with explanations tied to that material. Projects keep instructions and source context together. Have the educator check factual accuracy, ambiguity and difficulty before selecting questions. Include an intentionally unclear learner response so the team can discuss how a helpful explanation differs from an unsupported judgement.6
- Teacher or tertiary tutor
- Projects
Explore synthetic support-work data
Use an invented table of support-enquiry categories and response states for data analysis. Ask the assistant to group themes and show its method. Verify the source totals outside ChatGPT, then inspect any blank or overlapping category. The exercise develops administrative analysis skills without labelling real learners or using a generated pattern to determine who should receive support.9

- Data analysis
Review a staff preparation assistant
If the institution maintains a custom GPT for teaching preparation, review the approved instructions with its owner. OpenAI publishes guidance for transferring custom GPT workflows into plugins. Test the replacement on a lesson brief with missing information and on a request outside its permitted purpose. Save the comparison so the staff owner can decide whether the new workflow meets the same review standard.7

Gather a reference pack for a lesson
Use an agent task to assemble permitted public sources for a proposed topic. Ask for the link, the claim supported and any uncertainty beside each source. Connected apps may provide authorised institutional material where enabled. Read the original documents before accepting the pack, and keep the task from publishing content or accessing learner records during the workshop.8,9

- Agent research and connectors via apps
Evaluate a drafted practice question
- State the intended concept and provide the reading learners will use.
- Request a question, expected reasoning and an explanation of uncertain assumptions.
- Have another educator attempt the question and challenge the suggested answer.
- Save the accepted version with a record of human edits and source checks.

Education in Nelson: questions
Can the workshop include school support staff?
Support staff can practise organising a fictional enquiry and explaining an approved process. Teachers can work on learning activities in the same session. Give each group its own success criteria so an administrative answer is not evaluated as a classroom resource.
Will we practise with student assessment files?
Choose invented answers for the initial lesson exercise. Check your provider's policy before considering real submissions; NMIT publishes its own responsible-use policy.4 The session should teach source checking and useful explanations rather than generate grades for identifiable students.
How do reusable GPT instructions fit current tools?
Treat existing instructions as material to review, not a guarantee of ongoing account access. OpenAI's migration guide describes moving custom GPT workflows into plugins.7 Ask the institution's administrator to confirm available options, then test the approved replacement with familiar tasks.
What can an educator do when the answer looks wrong?
Return to the supplied reading and identify the unsupported step. Ask ChatGPT to explain its reasoning, then correct or discard the draft. Keep a record of the mistake so colleagues learn what to test when using the same activity prompt.
