Education in Wellington
Aotea College's response to generative AI began with a school survey and led to a staff working group and revised assessment expectations. The Ministry published that Porirua example in March 2025.3 It gives local staff a concrete way to discuss consistent practice without assuming every Wellington school has the same policy.
TheColab comes to schools and training workplaces throughout the region, or teaches remotely when colleagues need to join from several sites. We use a public reading, approved course instructions and fabricated records. The session helps staff turn an open-ended request into a repeatable exercise with a stated learning goal, suitable references and a responsible reviewer.
Paid employees in education went from 24,877 in February 2020 to 26,163 in February 2025 (+5.2%).

Local context
- Massey's Wellington campus is in Mount Cook, while the Aotea College example sits in Porirua.2,3 These distinct settings call for different resources and review owners. Business Central's 2026 priorities also seek stronger links between education and employers.1 A generic training provider can use an invented workplace brief to practise relevant course planning.1,2,3

Where ChatGPT helps education teams
Organise a unit-planning Project
Create a Project with an approved unit outline, learning objectives and permitted readings. Projects keep related files and instructions available for continuing work.7 Ask ChatGPT for an activity sequence and explain how each task supports the objectives. The tutor checks the connection and adjusts the sequence to the class's needs before using any draft material.

Build a practice-question GPT
Give a custom GPT an authorised reading and instructions to create practice questions with a source-based answer guide. Custom GPTs support uploaded knowledge and tailored behaviour.6 Test an unclear concept and a question outside the reading. The assistant should flag the missing evidence, while the teacher verifies correctness and decides whether the question actually exercises the intended skill. New GPT creation is now limited to Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs in favour of plugins, so check your school's workspace and the migration guidance first.9

Inspect a fabricated resource-use table
Use data analysis on made-up resource categories, session dates and counts. ChatGPT supports calculations and charts from structured uploads.6 Ask it to explain how it groups the rows and handles missing values. An administrator checks the arithmetic and considers possible recording issues before proposing a change. The exercise avoids student identifiers and teaches evidence checking without interpreting individual performance.

Locate a current staff reference
Where your provider has approved a suitable app, use it to retrieve an accessible course or staff guide. Connected apps work within authorised accounts and workspace settings.8 Ask for the document location and relevant passage, then open the original. If the connection is unavailable or unapproved, practise with an uploaded public guide and the same source-checking steps.

- Connectors and connected apps
Test a question before learners see it
- Choose a permitted reading and describe the concept the question should test.
- Request a practice question, answer reasoning and the supporting source passage.
- Have another educator attempt it and identify unclear or misleading wording.
- Revise the instructions and retain the checked example for future planning.

Education in Wellington: questions
Can early-stage users follow the workshop?
Begin with a short reading and a simple planning request. Staff learn to supply context and inspect the answer before trying reusable assistants. No programming is needed for the teaching-resource exercises on this page.
Could the custom GPT grade a class?
The proposed GPT creates practice material for staff review. Assessment use needs a separate decision under the provider's rules and the Ministry's guidance.4 Keep the grading judgement and responsibility with the designated educator. Check your workspace type too, because OpenAI has limited new GPTs to Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.9
How does staff policy enter a Project?
Add the approved instructions and identify the document owner and version. Projects can retain files and context for recurring work.7 Staff should check the original policy when an answer concerns an assessment boundary.
What should a department measure after training?
Look at resource accuracy, the clarity of instructions and the corrections made by reviewers. Use the same permitted reading when colleagues compare outputs. Agreement about evidence and purpose gives the department a useful basis for revising its workflow.
