Manufacturing in Wellington

A useful manufacturing exercise ends with a finding that somebody can reproduce. Bring a practice job export, a public product description or a blank quality form. TheColab helps your team frame the question, inspect the working and record the review, with hands-on training delivered at your Wellington workplace.

Metco describes an in-house chain from concept and prototyping to manufacture.2 That local context suggests a fictional job that changes hands between design and production. We use such a scenario to practise noticing missing specifications and mismatched job records, without inventing a success story about a real manufacturer.

Paid employees in manufacturing went from 13,154 in February 2020 to 12,317 in February 2025 (−6.4%).

Where ChatGPT helps manufacturing teams

  • Investigate a production export

Ask data analysis to compare job status, rejected units and recorded rework in a synthetic production table. Uploaded-file analysis supports tables, charts and code-backed working.8 Have it list exclusions and unresolved units before producing a chart. The planner then checks a selected job against the original record and documents any corrected assumptions.

    • Production planner
    • Data analysis and file uploads
  • Assemble a customer-job briefing

Keep a demonstration order brief, glossary and reviewed discussion notes in a Project. Project context can support ongoing drafting.6 Ask for separate sections covering confirmed requirements, open questions and the person responsible for the next check. Use a fictional Seaview engineering order rather than a confidential customer specification.

    • Customer service and scheduling lead
    • Projects
  • Test a quality-form drafting GPT

A custom GPT can use approved instructions and knowledge for a recurring form.7 Design one to draft the narrative section from sanitised inspection notes, preserving uncertainty and refusing to invent measurements. Test a missing observation and an inconsistent part identifier. A quality reviewer should decide whether the record is complete. Only Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can create new GPTs, and OpenAI is moving custom GPTs to plugins, so keep a separate copy of the instructions for migration.11

    • Quality assurance administrator
    • Custom GPTs with knowledge
  • Retrieve a controlled reference

With an enabled app, locate the approved supplier-document folder and inspect a relevant reference before drafting a question. OpenAI describes connected apps as a route to external information.9 Keep access limited to the intended knowledge set. Confirm that the file is current before treating its wording as evidence for a purchase request.

    • Procurement support officer
    • Connected apps and connectors
  • Research a replacement supplier's public information

Ask ChatGPT Work to collect public capability statements in its browser and build a comparison with source links. Work can read, click and type on web pages, so the brief needs firm limits.10 Set the task to collect evidence only, with no orders or account changes. The buyer must confirm technical fit, lead times and commercial terms directly with each supplier.

    • Procurement manager
    • ChatGPT Work with browser research

Resolve an apparent rework pattern

  1. Build a demonstration export with clear job identifiers and an explicit definition of rework.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to group the records and show the calculation behind the largest apparent difference.
  3. Reconcile the selected group with the source rows and inspect whether cancelled jobs distorted it.
  4. Draft a qualified finding that records the limits and assigns the next investigation to a planner.

Manufacturing in Wellington: questions

Can we train using an ERP export?

Use a sanitised or fictional export with documented columns. Identify which fields represent current status and which are historical, so a plausible chart does not conceal a reporting error.

Will this replace a production-planning system?

The training focuses on analysis and communication around your existing records. Keep the scheduling system authoritative and make staff review any suggested change before entering it there.

How should we assess a quality GPT?

Test incomplete notes, contradictory evidence and requests outside its intended task. Record whether it asks for missing observations and whether its draft retains the inspector's actual wording. Keep the instructions in a separate document, because OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs in favour of plugins.11

Do you cover multi-site manufacturing teams?

We can plan an on-site exercise around a shared reporting problem and the people who own it. Public workshop days can introduce individual staff before a wider internal rollout.
