Manufacturing in Nelson
A fictional Nelson production planner wants to know why a weekly report shows more incomplete jobs. The first step is to inspect status codes, missing rows and the export period. ChatGPT can analyse attached data files and help organise findings. It should not jump from a pattern in a spreadsheet to a claim about machine performance.5
We come to manufacturing workplaces for team sessions and provide public workshop days through TheColab. Select a redacted export and a reporting definition sheet before training. The team practises a reproducible question, checks a result with the person who knows the process and turns confirmed findings into an understandable management note.
Paid employees in manufacturing went from 2,849 in February 2020 to 2,608 in February 2025 (−8.5%).

Local context
- Port Nelson's published cargo mix includes seafood and processed timber. NRDA also reports food and beverage AI training across Nelson Tasman. That establishes regional learning activity and export context, rather than proving a particular Nelson factory has deployed ChatGPT.1,21,2

Where ChatGPT helps manufacturing teams
Audit the reporting data first
Upload a safe copy of the job export and ask for missing fields, duplicate references and inconsistent category names. Only then request a summary by workstream. Have ChatGPT display its method and compare a sample of outputs with your spreadsheet calculation. File-analysis tools support the exploration; the planner owns the interpretation.5
- Production planner
- Data analysis and uploaded files
Keep an investigation's evidence organised
Create a Project around a fictional packaging discrepancy. Add approved process descriptions and a glossary, then use separate chats for the evidence summary and questions for the supplier. Projects retain shared files and instructions. Tell the tool to identify absent evidence so a tidy narrative does not hide an unresolved cause.3
- Quality investigation coordinator
- Projects for evidence review
Test a manufacturing reference GPT
Build an internal custom GPT for locating office guidance on documentation and escalation. Assign an owner and test it with an outdated procedure reference. Workspace controls can govern GPT sharing, ownership and allowed apps or actions. The quality lead decides the question boundary and verifies that answers point back to approved guidance.4 OpenAI is replacing custom GPTs with plugins, so treat this build as a pilot that will need migrating.7
- Quality systems administrator
- Custom GPTs with governed sharing
Retrieve the approved supplier document
Where your workspace permits a connector or app, practise finding the current supplier reference before drafting a clarification request. Confirm what the integration can read and whether it can act. OpenAI documents connected tools for contextual information and supported actions. Keep the exercise in reference mode and have procurement staff send the final request.4,5
- Procurement officer
- ChatGPT connectors and apps
Investigate an unexplained status change
- Export a redacted reporting sample and document how each status is defined.
- Request a data-quality report before asking for performance comparisons.
- Reconcile the selected groups with the production record owner.
- Write a management note that distinguishes verified findings from hypotheses.

Manufacturing in Nelson: questions
Does the local evidence show factories already using ChatGPT?
NRDA records AI training for food and beverage businesses, but does not identify their selected products or internal deployments. We use that as evidence of regional learning interest. Your proposed exercise should be assessed on its own data and review process.2
Can we work from a spreadsheet rather than a live connection?
Begin with an approved file export. ChatGPT accepts spreadsheets and data exports for analysis, so a connector is not required to learn how to frame questions or reconcile results. Keep a copy of the input used for the exercise.5
What belongs in our manufacturing Project?
Add the definitions needed for the investigation and instructions about the output's purpose. Projects share that context across related chats. Avoid accumulating unrelated customer specifications that make it difficult to tell which document applies to a particular question.3
How should we choose the first team to train?
Include the report producer, a production supervisor and someone who can approve data use. They bring different checks to the same example. Leave with a clear question, an accepted method and an escalation route for findings the spreadsheet cannot explain.
