Farming and horticulture in Canterbury

DairyNZ's generative AI guidance describes administrative drafting and analysis of farm records. It also warns that data transfer from farm software is often manual and that overseas assumptions can mislead. Our training uses these limits to shape a modest first task: inspect an export, explain its fields and list missing information.2

ChatGPT Projects let you keep season files, instructions and related chats in a common workspace.4 We use that context to practise reporting, rather than assuming a connection to your farm-management system. The examples below are proposed exercises for a generic business, with an owner who approves every output.

Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 16,511 in February 2020 to 16,597 in February 2025 (+0.5%).

Local context

  • Southern Packers' grower profiles show Canterbury's mix of arable crops, vegetables and livestock. Belmont Farm is in Kirwee, while Turley Farms includes a Temuka operation. A training dataset can reflect that variety without borrowing a named grower's private records.11
  • DairyNZ reports dashboard testing with a Canterbury farm through Connected Farm. This local research combines different data streams; it does not mean ChatGPT has automatic access to those streams.33

Where ChatGPT helps farming and horticulture teams

  • Inspect a harvest export

Upload an approved spreadsheet showing crop, paddock, recorded quantity and reporting period. Ask data analysis to identify blank fields and inconsistent units before drawing a chart. Request the cleaned output as a separate file, with a record of changes. Reconcile a sample of rows and totals against the source export before discussing any apparent pattern.5

    • Grower administrator
    • File and data analysis
  • Keep season planning in context

Create a Project containing your approved task list and a plain description of roles. Ask for a draft weekly office plan that separates confirmed tasks from pending decisions. Project instructions should require the model to ask about missing inputs. The manager checks availability and task dependencies before assigning work to the team.4

    • Farm manager
    • Projects
  • Maintain a reusable briefing assistant

If you already use a custom GPT for farm-office briefings, review how its instructions and knowledge will move to a plugin. OpenAI's current guidance describes that transition and requires separate work for custom actions. Test an ordinary request and an incomplete record before sharing the replacement with staff. Keep a named maintainer for reference updates.6

    • Office workflow owner
    • Custom GPT workflow migration
  • Find the approved supplier note

Where your workspace allows an app connection, practise retrieving an approved supplier document through that connection. Ask for its revision and the unresolved question to send back. Connected apps retain the source account's access boundaries. Use an uploaded file when the required app is unavailable, and check the document yourself before sending the enquiry.6

    • Purchasing coordinator
    • Apps and connectors
  • Prepare a supervised research pack

Use an agent workflow in ChatGPT Work to organise permitted files into a draft pack for the adviser. Define the output as an index, a short briefing and open questions. Limit the task to preparation. Tool availability depends on workspace settings, and the owner should review each cited record before the pack leaves the business.8

Check a crop report from export to decision

  1. Select a de-identified crop spreadsheet and write down the question that the manager needs answered.
  2. Ask for a field audit, a separate analysis file and an explanation of assumptions.
  3. Match the output to the original records, record corrections and let the manager decide the next operational step.

Farming and horticulture in Canterbury: questions

Must our farm software connect to ChatGPT?

No. An approved export is enough for an initial exercise. DairyNZ notes that integration remains a challenge, so we confirm the transfer method before choosing the task.2

Can analysis prove why a crop result changed?

A spreadsheet can show an association, but the manager must test possible explanations against field knowledge. Ask ChatGPT to distinguish observations from assumptions and retain its calculation file.5

Are custom GPTs still the right starting point?

Review the current migration guidance first. For a new repeat workflow, assess the supported plugin path in your workspace; for an existing GPT, test its replacement before switching.6

How do Canterbury teams attend training?

TheColab can deliver in person at your farm or grower office. Teams can also attend public workshop days. Bring an approved sample export and the person who understands how it was produced.
