Farming and horticulture in Tasman

TheColab brings ChatGPT training to Tasman workplaces. We can use synthetic orchard records or a business-approved export, then teach the team to ask a clear question and verify the answer. A generic grower office might begin by investigating incomplete harvest entries before it attempts a seasonal comparison.

Technology already has a local operations context: Golden Bay Fruit describes robotic and electronic grading at its Motueka site.1 That does not establish adoption of ChatGPT. The exercises here are proposed office workflows, with human review as part of each task.

Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 4,932 in February 2020 to 4,920 in February 2025 (−0.2%).

Local context

  • Birdhurst identifies apples and gold kiwifruit among its crops. A mixed-crop exercise should preserve the difference between records instead of pooling them into an unexplained total.22
  • HortNZ's account of Nelson-Tasman flood damage in 2025 supports recovery communication as another useful practice topic. Work from your own checked notes when describing access or crop impacts.33

Where ChatGPT helps farming and horticulture teams

  • Investigate an orchard export

Use ChatGPT file work to prepare a reviewable workbook.5 Supply an authorised harvest table and ask data analysis to separate missing variety entries from recorded rejects. Define each field first. Check a sample of source rows and the output formulas before the manager uses the chart to frame a planning question.

    • Grower business analyst
    • ChatGPT data analysis and files
  • Keep recovery communications in one Project

Projects organise related sources and instructions.4 In a generic Tasman farm exercise, collect cleared access notes and a reviewed supplier update. Ask for separate drafts for staff and buyers, with unknown details identified. The owner checks both messages so the audience changes without altering the facts about the farm.

    • Farm office manager
    • ChatGPT Projects
  • Review a reusable grower-office assistant

Practise a skill that asks for a source and drafts a bin-record query. Skills bundle instructions with supporting files, and workspace settings control who can share them.8 Inspect the account's current options. Test the reusable instructions on a missing reference and require the assistant to seek clarification.

    • Office workflow owner
    • Skills and reusable instructions
  • Find an approved source through a connection

Plugins can expose connected services where enabled.6 Teach the connector workflow using a cleared document area and a deliberately narrow question about an office procedure. Ask the user to open the returned source. Check the connected identity and avoid assuming that a useful summary means the whole team has access.

    • Workspace administrator
    • ChatGPT connectors through approved apps
  • Gather public recovery information for review

ChatGPT's current browser documentation describes Work tasks and approval controls.7 For a Work research exercise, select public agency pages and request an evidence list with unresolved points. Keep logins and submissions outside the practice scope. The farm manager opens the sources and decides whether any information applies to the business.

Resolve a missing harvest field

  1. Provide a minimised sample export and the definitions of its harvest fields.
  2. Request a workbook that separates complete entries from records needing correction.
  3. Have the grower office inspect the flagged rows against the original register.
  4. Draft a source-linked query for the supervisor and retain the checked workbook.

Farming and horticulture in Tasman: questions

Can an owner learn this without an analyst?

Start with a familiar table and a clear question about it. Bring the person who records the harvest information. We teach how to inspect the answer and ask for corrections, with more complex analysis left for a colleague who understands the data.

Do you still teach agent mode?

No. OpenAI says agent mode is no longer available and points to ChatGPT Work. OpenAI's browser guidance describes Work and its permissions.7 We check the interface before the session and choose a public-source task that the approved account can perform.

Will a reusable assistant send grower messages?

Keep the first version at draft stage. Have the liaison officer approve the content and recipient through your normal process. A later sending action needs a defined owner, tested permissions and an explicit business decision about what it may do.

How should we evaluate the orchard pilot?

Use the same cleared input to compare the existing method with the reviewed AI result. Record wrong classifications and missing evidence. Expand the task only when staff can explain the output and correct it without losing the original records.
