ChatGPT for farm businesses in the Waikato

Most Waikato farm offices already juggle a herd system, a spreadsheet and a phone full of voice notes. ChatGPT is for that paperwork, used with the files you choose to upload.

Farming and horticulture in Waikato

Dairy accounts for 7.8 per cent of the regional economy and about 10,600 farming and processing jobs, of which 6,500 are on farms2. The Council's series shows dairy cattle farming slipping from about 6 per cent of industry employment in 2005 to 4 per cent in 2022, yet the herd and supply records have not shrunk to match1. LIC at Newstead, Halter near Morrinsville and Zealong's tea estate show how wide the local primary sector is.

ChatGPT Business gives the team a workspace, Projects for the season, and skills that share one set of instructions with the people you choose. Personal accounts are a poor place for staff records or supplier prices. Data analysis can chart a workbook. It still needs a human to accept the result.

Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 17,794 in February 2020 to 18,014 in February 2025 (+1.2%).

Local context

  • The region has the country's highest concentration of agritech firms, according to the Council's 2025 trends paper, and it contributes around 13 per cent of national goods and services exports.3
  • MINDA can already pass animal events to and from Halter and Gallagher Animal Performance, which is the existing cure for typing the same draft twice.4
  • Linking DairyBase to MINDA can fill in up to 30 per cent of the physical records DairyBase needs, including stock, reproduction and health.5
  • Fieldays at Mystery Creek draws over 1,100 exhibitors and an audience above 100,000. A 2026 prototype award went to a phone-based LiDAR liveweight tool.6

Where ChatGPT helps farming and horticulture teams

  • A season Project

Put mating dates, contractor contacts and this year's targets in one Project. Later chats stay tied to that folder instead of starting blank every Monday. Close it at the end of the season and open the next.

    • Farm owners and managers
    • Projects
  • Charts from the workbook

Upload a milk, feed or labour sheet and use data analysis to compare seasons. Ask it to show the working. If a total looks odd, open the sheet before you quote it to the accountant or the bank.

    • Office managers
    • data analysis
  • A staff-rules skill

A skill loaded with the induction notes, the safety steps and the accommodation rules gives seasonal staff the same answer, and ChatGPT uses it when a question fits. Test it with ten real questions. Update the file when the rule changes.

    • People leads
    • skills
  • Voice notes into a job list

Talk through the day on the phone, then ask for a diary entry and a job list. You still decide what is true. This is faster than typing in the ute, and it is not a substitute for the herd record.

    • Managers on the move
    • voice
  • A careful look at a long consent

Add a public or already-approved consent to the season Project, and ask for a list of actions with the page they came from. An adviser confirms anything that changes how you farm.

    • Owners preparing for an audit
    • Projects

Turn a weekly sheet into a note you can stand behind

  1. Drop the export into the season Project, with names and account numbers taken out.
  2. Run data analysis and ask for the three changes that matter, plus the formula or filter behind each one.
  3. Write a five-line note in your own words from the checked points.
  4. Save the note back into the Project so next week starts from the same place.

Farming and horticulture in Waikato: questions

Can I do this from the phone in the paddock?

Yes for voice notes, short drafts and the staff-rules skill. Spreadsheet analysis is easier on a laptop, then you read the result on the phone. The workspace should be the business one, not a private login shared among staff.

Will it replace MINDA?

No. MINDA remains the herd system. ChatGPT helps with the writing and the workbook around it. Collar and milking links that already feed MINDA are a better fix for double entry than copying the herd into a chat.

Do you visit farms outside Hamilton?

Yes. Training can be at the kitchen table or the office anywhere in the region, or online if calving makes a visit impossible.

What should we have open?

One spreadsheet you trust, the staff rules you want in a skill, and a decision about whether the team will use Business rather than a mix of free accounts.

Is this an OpenAI course?

No. TheColab teaches it independently. OpenAI has not endorsed the sessions.
