Module 2: Your first good prompts
Turn notes into a summary and actions
Allow 5 minutes, including any practice below.
Use the source as a boundary
A summary should make the supplied information easier to use. It should keep uncertainty visible.
Our fictional Wellington HR team has these invented meeting notes:
Induction guide needs shorter paragraphs.
The HR coordinator will draft a revision.
The operations manager will check the safety section.
No deadline was agreed.
Team wants a checklist for day-one equipment.
No equipment owner was named.Ask ChatGPT:
Summarise only these fictional meeting notes.
Give three summary bullets, then an action table with:
Action | Owner | Due date | Unresolved detail.
Use "Not agreed" for missing owners or dates.
Do not invent decisions or employee information.
Notes: [paste the six supplied lines here]Replace the bracketed instruction with the six lines above.
Know what a good answer preserves
| Action | Owner | Due date | Unresolved detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revise induction guide | HR coordinator | Not agreed | Deadline |
| Check safety section | Operations manager | Not agreed | Deadline |
| Prepare equipment checklist | Not agreed | Not agreed | Owner and deadline |
This is an illustrative checking guide. The team's request for a checklist is not proof that an owner accepted that job.
Check a policy summary too
If you supply an approved public policy extract, ask: "Summarise this extract only. List exceptions that appear in it. Say which details are not covered."
Check the original wording for dates, obligations, and exceptions. Do not ask ChatGPT to invent an employment policy or declare that it complies with the law.
Try it: Find one unknown detail in the notes. Ask a follow-up that makes it explicit in the summary. Do not turn "not agreed" into a deadline just to make the table look complete.
